   NUPUR - BANK NEAR LANSDOWNE
   HAVELI - 87 GEORGE (MARKET MALL) - 241-1700

NOTE: It appears that the Nupur may have closed for renovations and will eventually be re-opening with a new theme, but it's not certain that this will still involve the same food offering. As soon as something more definite is known, it will be posted here.

The best Indian food we have had was at the Nupur on Bank Street near Lansdowne Park. That was some time ago, however.

Amen, to that (on the Nupur) . We were there about three weeks ago; it is *still* very good. I know others have their own favorites, this one is mine.

A lot of people like the Haveli in the market area too. I prefer Nupur because of Ali and his staff.

PEARL OF INDIA - 2150 ST. JOSEPH BLVD, ORLEANS - 834-6554
   MUKUT - 610 RIDEAU - 789-2220

For East Indian we used to enjoy Mukut on Rideau until the same people opened Pearl of India on St. joseph Blvd. in Orleans (don't know whether still same owners). Food is good, service friendly and prices reasonable.

CEYLONTA - 403 SOMERSET ST. W. - 237-7812

For a less expensive meal try Ceylonta on the north side of Somerset just west of Bank St. The service is friendly and helpful, and the prices are nearly riduculous (we stuffed ourselves, including an imported beer for me, for under $20).

LIGHT OF INDIA - 730 BANK - 563-4411

For buffet affecionados, this is such a wonderful restaurant. Not too many items (like those crappy chinese-buffets) and so nicely prepared. The waiters understand English and are really helpful. We always eat well here and the naan and pappadums are ADDICTIVE!

To finish off the usual fantastic meal, you ought to order "Tchai" or their special spicy tea soooo refreshing.

Light of India - corner Bank and First - next to U-Frame-It. Yes, Haveli's is terrific also. Just that I like Light of India's intimacy better.

ROSES CAFE - 523 GLADSTONE - 233-5574

I quite like The Roses. Very tasty & reliably well-made food, pleasant interior, sometimes slow but nice staff (a woman at my table recently didn't eat much of her plate; she just wasn't hungry, & we had the chef inquiring if it wasn't to her liking, which I loved), and it's fairly cheap. And very vegetarian-friendly. The sort of place you wished you lived near so you'd end up eating there all the time.

My only complaint is that it's a little busy sometimes; perhaps I should stop posting about it here... ;^)

The Roses serves up excellent food and ambience at very good prices. There is always a very large selection of curries as "special" curries in addition to the lengthy menu. The vegetarian options are listed BEFORE the non-vegetarian ones on this menu!

My lady friend and I just went to the Roses on Friday evening for supper and enjoyed both the food and the service.

If you like having your tongue on fire, try the chicken dish created in honour of Nelson Mandella. Hot, hot, hot.

This restaurant is in an old converted house so the dining areas are in different parts of the restaurant and there are not too many tables in each area. The decor is pleasantly East Indian ambiant.
