European Cuisine

DALMACIA RESTAURANT - 1702 CARLING AVE - 728-0000

The Dalmacia Restaurant on Carling Ave across from the Rose Bowl and next to the Steak and Caesar serves excellent European cuisine such as schnitzel, goulash, cabbage rolls, raznice, cavabcice etc. with a Croatian flair that are scrumptiously prepared with generous quantities. Vegetables are always done to perfection. No soggy veggies here.

Their platters for two with soup AND salad will satisfy the largest appetite. Service is top notch and friendly. Decor is attractive and classy and prices reasonable.

This is an update of my earlier review of this restaurant. Has been consistently good over the approximately 5 years I've been going there. I agree with the dated, but still accurate except possibly for price that may have changed, but is still good value.

Let me recommend the Dalmacia on Carling, next door to the new Steak and Caesar. I understand this place used to be on Wellington (at Holland), alas, I never had the good luck to have experienced it in that location. But do try it now. Smallish but pleasant decor (clean, fresh looking, white linen and a fresh flower).

Sunday night I had no reservation but, having arrived at 6, I had a choice of seating (it filled up a bit by 7:30). The owner appears to wait the tables as well and the service couldn't have been better. This man should take new waiters/waitresses and give lessons.

I had the chicken cordon bleu, it came with either soup or salad. Having chosen the salad, I was glad I did-one of the biggest and best I've had in ages. More like a European-style salad (not unusual here as this is a European-style rest.) with things like beets and a most tasty dressing. The main course was GIANT. Make sure you are hungry. Besides the properly cooked c.b., there was the most delicious home made noodles (other choices were rice or mashed) with mushrooms and a sauce and plenty of veggies-also cooked properly (i.e.not soggy). With a glass of white this feast was only $21 before tip. I enjoyed it all so could not sample dessert. Try it - I'm sure you'll like it. Lots of European things like schnitzels and such. Much choice. Enjoy

LINDENHOF GERMAN RESTAURANT - 365 FOREST ST. - 725-3481

If German is your thing, the Lindenhof on Richmond near Woodroffe offers an excellent schnitzel experience. End the meal with a glass of light, fruity, Appelkorn brandy annd an order of their apple fritters with a scoop of vanilla on the side and you'll believe that "Jah, hier ist Gott!"

I visited the Lindenhof this summer for lunch with friends and we were pleased with the food and the service. Our server was friendly and chatty, but not intrusive.

I enjoyed my smoked pork hocks very much even if they might have given me my cholesterol hit for the month.

I don't remember what my friends' selections were, but all was enjoyed.

NEW DUBROVNIK - 1170 Carling Ave. - 722-1490

Over the last couple of years, I've introduced my wife (new to Ottawa) to quite a few of the areas restaurants. Well, about a dozen.

One of the 1st we went to, and greatly enjoyed, was the New Dubrovnik.

Last night we finally got around to repeating there. Same excellent service, nice decor, excellent (and filling) meal. Of all the places we've been to, it stands out as being good value.

1/2 L house wine, dinners, 3 liqueurs, espressos - 2.5 hours at the table (intentional - server kept checking on us), $65 ($10 coupon from the junk mail gracefully accepted)

We won't wait so long to repeat again.

AMBER GARDEN - 1 Richmond Rd. - 725-2757

I have been to this eastern European restaurant in the past and returned the other day to find that the fare and service is still well worth return visits.

I went with my luncheon group of four. Surprisingly, the place wasn't very busy, certainly, not because of lack of service or good, eastern European food.

Three of my lunch companions had the soup of the day, a tomato/carrot puree and I decided to try the tripe soup. Both kinds of soup were brought to the table piping hot and tasty.

We all decided to have the combination platter for $10.95. This included a tasty cabbage roll, a couple of melt-in-your-mouth perogies, Hunter stew, chicken paprickash, grilled debreccni sausage and mashed potatos.

Everyone was happy with their selection. Except for the chocolate moose I had for dessert that was quite tasty, I don't remember the names of those the rest of the group had. They looked tasty anyway.

I'm looking forward to going back and sampling some of the other menu items like borscht (beet) soup, pickled herring, weiner schnitzel, Hungarian vegetable stew and beef goulash.

I opted for the more expensive tripe soup at $6.95. The soup of the day was only $2.00 extra with an entrée.
