Out of Town Restaurants

MILLER'S OVEN - 1137 MILL ST., MANOTICK - 692-4304

Another spot in Manotick, well worth the drive, is the Millers Oven. It is in an old house run by seniors of the area. Originally I believe it was opened as a place where seniors could get a good meal if cooking was not their forte. Then those younger than seniors discovered it and now it is a great place for a noon meal. Great food but don't try the lemon meringue pie. I said don't try it. Don't try it! See, now you're hooked.

BROWNIES - BEST WESTERN HOTEL (KINGSTON)

When in Kingston and looking for an up-scale restaurant, try Brownies in the Best Western Hotel (trust me, it's true :-). I believe it is on Bath Rd. just west of Sir John A. MacDonald.

Fully the equal of the best in the Ottawa area. Their table d'hote specials are always worth considering but everything I've had has always been excellent. Home-made super soups.

SAVOURY PURSUITS - ALMONTE, ONT.

Check out this restaurant only 30 min from downtown Ottawa. Food is excellent and VERY healthy, service is great, and prices very reasonable.

You may have read the review in the Citizen that was quite positive and deservedly.

Enjoy!!!

JOSEF'S CELLAR - PEMBROKE, ONT.

We were "up the valley" last week and stopped for dinner at Josef's. Just east of the centre of town on the main street around the court area.

Atmosphere good. Service excellent. Wine good selection. Food - cooked as you ordered and to perfection ("blue" steaks if ordered, lightly cooked fish, no sauce if requested). Priced from about $10.00 to $13.95 for 8 oz filet mignon. Total bill for 2 was $ 40.58 with all drinks, food and tax.

Good place if you're up that way.

COURTYARD TEA ROOM - PERTH, ONT.

My wife and I went to Perth today and enjoyed a marvelous lunch at the Courtyard Tea Room. We had to wait about 20 minutes, it was so busy, but we just left our names and went shopping down the street at Kelly's Gift Shoppe which was having an open house. Our table was ready and waiting when we came back.

Judy had a ham and cheese sandwitch on brown (nice whole-grain bread that tasted home-made); I had a toasted Cohoe salmon salad sandwitch on toasted brown, and we shared a pot of tea. The sandwitches were delicious and substantial.

For dessert, we each had "Mom's apple crumble", which was heavenly! I had mine a la mode, with excellent Peterson's ice cream. Best apple crumble we ever tasted! To take full advantage of the 45 minute drive to get there, I had a second dessert: cocoanut cream pie. It (and the apple crumble) was huge in size, and it had a thick, tasty topping of delicious merenge. It was topped and loaded with substantial-sized shavings of cocanut, and was soooo good!

The bill came to $25.00 excluding the tip. Service was excellent, by the way.

Good place if you're up that way.

THE VICTORIA WOOLEN MILL - 7 MILL ST. ALMONTE - 256-0268

It a real must ! My husband and I loved it. You can have breakfast, lunch or dinner at this lovely Victorian style restaurant, with soft music and an ambiance that sweeps you off your feet.

The other side of the restaurant is a open concept of a gift shop, lots of angels and special ornaments, the upstairs is beautifully decorated and scented.

Also the deserts (carrot cake) for me was fantastic, my husband had the apple crumble, which he fully enjoyed.

I hope you get the chance to visit this place, I'm sure you wont regret it.

THE RED DOT - 5673 MAIN ST., OSGOODE - 826-0552

One of the best places to eat in this part of the valley is "The Dot" in Osgoode. Dinner specials are a winner and the Tex-Mex food is great. I recommend quesadillas and fahitas. Next door is the bar where the snowmobilers and locals hang out with some of the same food.

THE SWAN - KARS ONT

"The Swan" is another favourite British pub by Hurst Marina and Kars bridge. Nice community atmosphere among the regulars at the bar. Lucky people get to sit in a nook by the fire in winter. If you want a nicer dining experience or you have a group, there's a large room upstairs.
