Mexican and Tex/Mex Cuisine

LONE STAR CAFE - 780 BASELINE RD. - 224-4044 OR 224-4047

Last year I spent a couple a weeks in and around San Antonio, Texas. One of the pleasures of the trip was the BBQ. It was *always* the same - lean brisket, sauce, and coleslaw.

My question is: Is there any Texas-style available anywhere in the area?

Just recently I was there and I ordered their vegetarian fahitas and they were so incredibly delicious, no word of a lie. I used to die for their chicken ones but their vegetarian are just as good, perhaps better but then again I just became vegetarian so I could be a little biased.

TUCSON'S - 2440 BANK @ HUNT CLUB - 738-7596

I was encouraged to go this restaurant because it usually had a good Blues band playing there. We found out it also has a special dinner/entertainment package as well. Here I am thinking that the dinner was going to be standard fare. Was I wrong or what?

The place looks like a Southwestern bar so naturally I'm expecting fahitas, steaks etc which they do have. But the meals we had were very gourmet, beautifully presented on gorgeous plates. The entrees we had were grilled porkchop to perfection, a medley of beans marinated in a light vinagrette. I had the linguine with clam sauce.....oh so delicious. The portions are HUGE. My appetizer alone (seafood salad) was enough of a meal for me. Dessert was included...I had homemade cheesecake (the lightest and smoothest I have ever had) and my friend had triple chocolate pecan pie (the title says it all....:)

This was indeed one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Highly recommended. Located at Bank/Hunt Club. Reservations recommended.

MEXICALI ROSA'S - DOWS LAKE - 234-8156

Rosa's Mexicali on Dow's Lake is the best Tex Mex in town. Their menu is good and the food fresh and perfectly spiced. The staff is very serviceful and the fajitas are great.

All others pale....

FALEENA'S - 742 BANK ST. - 233-2010

Faleena's on Bank in the Glebe is "upscale Mexican" (no, not a contradiction in terms). Fabulous salsa with the requisite chips 'n' salsa appetizer and a nice range of choices, including a very well-done (that is, in terms of preparation quality, not cooking time) mole sauce.
