BELLA VISTA - 2645 ALTA VISTA DR. - 731-9841

For the best "traditional" pizza in town (medium density crust and a tomato sauce base) I still can't find anyone to beat the Bella Vista at Bank and Alta Vista. It's a restaurant with a take-out counter just inside the door.

They've been there forever; their pizza is outstanding and the real killer is driving home with this piping hot creation aromatizing your car -- it's enough to cause you to run red lights in your rush to get it to the kitchen table.

There are other places that make great "upscale" pizzas, with things like artichoke hearts and tiger shrimp on an ultrathin crust that doesn't so much slice as snap like a cracker, but the Bella Vista is always first in my mind when I think of nipping out for a 'za.

HOUSE OF GEORGIE - 211 GILMOUR - 238-1366

I'm a big fan of House of Georgie's pizzas. No flamboyant designer pizzas here, but the traditional pies are definitely a notch everything else I've tasted that's comparable. House of Georgies is on Gilmour, just west of Elgin.

HOUSE OF PIZZA - PRESCOTT ST. KEMPTVILLE

If you're heading down Highway 16 to 401, stop in Kemptville (Highway 43) at the HOUSE OF PIZZA, on Prescott Street.

Ask for Dave. He'll make your favourite pizza for you, but be careful, he's dangerous in the culinary arts.

Seriously, best pizza in or near Ottawa.

LA FAVOURITA - 180 PRESTON ST. - 233-6239

La Favorita is beyond delicous, definitely my favourite pizza in town. They have such unusual concoctions that they will definitely reawaken your tastebuds.

LOUIE'S RESTAURANT & PIZZERIA - 181 MCARTHUR RD., VANIER - 741-0724

It's true that this place is nothing but very simple and spartan in appearance but the pizza is definitely a treat and the service is so warm and friendly. In fact the owners noticed we were first timers in their establishment and written on their pizza in tomato sauce was "Welcome to Louie's". I thought that was very sweet......

RICARDO'S PIZZA - 267 BAY ST. - 233-1515 OR 235-5555

For authentic Chicago-style pizza...

My all time fave pizza joint has got to be Ricardo's on Bay. I moved back downtown just to be near them. Honest! If you want a thick crust, you ask for it. Some of the greatest guys around work there. There is no sit down area, but you don't pay tax if you pick it up yourself. I really like the Texan pizza. I know it sounds a little wierd, ground beef and corn and hot peppers. Its really boss, though.

Ate there the other night. Had Rustic Italian Pizza, really good. Good atmosphere, nice and bright, but not annoyingly bright. Price is okay too.

   MICO-ANGELO'S - 408 BANK ST. - 567-6666
                 - 1719 BASELINE RD. - 224-8787
                 - 2430 BANK - 738-1555

On the west side of Bank Street, about a block and a half north of Gladstone, there is an unimposing little restaurant whose front is painted in white, green and orange. It's called Mico-Angelo's and it is home to one of the finest calzones in Ottawa.

For the uninitiated, a calzone is like a pizza that's been folded over onto itself. So you get a whopping big crust "envelope" wrapped around a variety of tasty ingredients.

At Mico-Angelo's, the calzone crust comes out like the freshest-baked bread you can imagine, golden crusted on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and piping hot. Of the many fillings they offer, the best I've found is the house-named Mico-Angelo's Special. It's stuffed with thinly-sliced capicollo ham, artichoke hearts, black olives, a selection of herbs and spices, sun-dried tomatoes, all "glued" together by a soft filling of melted mozzarella cheese.

I recommend you ask to have it topped with an optional dollop of garlic pesto butter which, when your order arrives at your table, is slowly melting over the hot calzone crust. Accompanied by a remarkably fresh chef's salad -- that is actually quite a few enormous chunks of a wide variety of veggies cast over a bed of iceberg lettuce -- topped with the house herbed oil and vinegar dressing, it's an excellent, more-than-filling meal.

The best news of all is the price. If you limit yourself to ice water as a beverage, your bill for this feast will be in the neighbourhood of $10.00. On Wednesdays, they offer a 2-for-1 luncheon special or, if you're alone, a single calzone for half price plus a dollar.

Highly recommended. The decor is pure 50's formica, but they've obviously chosen to lavish their attention on their ingredients and their cooking.
