Thai Cuisine

CORIANDER - THAI CUISINE - 282 KENT ST. - 233-2828

If you're into Thai cuisine, or would like to give it a try, this is a must to include in any restaurant-hopping forays. There are many taste treats offered here.

We went as a group and asked for a typical Thai meal to be made up for us so the names of the dishes brought to the table were rather fleeting from memory. One of the items we had was a fairly spicy seafood combination, the tastiest seafood dish I've had in a long while. The quantities were not on the generous side, but probably representative of Thai restaurant offerings, judging from the few other places I've tried.

SWEET BASIL - BANK & HERON - 731-8424

It was my choice to pick the restaurant this time with a group of friends and I thought we should try Thai. On the suggestion of someone else here in this group, we tried Sweet Basil.

We were certainly not disappointed except for the shabby service. We were not allowed to get separate cheques, the waitress could barely speak English and therefore not able to help us decide or inform us about the dishes.

Aside from that, the food was out of this world but if you've got an appetite, make sure to order a couple of dishes, portions are VERY SMALL. The spicy dishes were very hot but to our liking. I had a scallop dish that just "melted in your mouth" like one other patron had claimed. My two other friends had chicken dishes that they rated 9 out of 10. Another down point is that they had only one?!!! choice for dessert; banana in a syrup sauce. But again, I would return because my taste buds were definitely awakened to a wonderful culinary delight!

By the way, the decor is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen in the Ottawa area.

The price range was from $10.00 - $15.00, still a little pricey when you consider the very small portions. It is located on Bank/Heron and the tel number is 731-8424.

GREEN PAPAYA - THAI RESTAURANT - 260 NEPEAN ST. -

Had dinner tonight at Green Papaya restaurant, 260 Nepean Street at Kent.It is owned and operated by the same people who operate Sweet Basil. There are 36 seats, the decor is very sophisticated, Thai red walls and artwork the is a joy to behold.

There are sculptures from Cambodia, Sri Lanka and of course from Thailand. The paintings are all by Thai artists and add to the restful feeling of the room. The server tonight was in Thai costume, shy and at the same time, very aware of what was happrning at our table, she did not hover but when something was needed she was there as if by magic...

The food...we started with a delicious, juicy satay of chicken, well seasoned and with a peanut sauce, well spiced but not the searing chili sauce served with our perfectly plum mussels. It seared the lips and was gone in minutes, not an easy thing to do with chili. We then ordered a deep fried grouper, again perfectly cooked and garnished. Something new to both of us next...the dish was with shrimp and with the unopened leaf at the top of a palm tree. I have never heard of this being served anywhere else in town and I'd go back just for that. A small banana in coconut milk was dessert, totally unnesssary, but totally enjoyed.

Our bill, with a decent Cote du Rhone was $90.00...we left a decent tip happily...go try.

ROYAL THAI - 272 DALHOUSIE ST. - 562-8818 Dropped by for lunch the other day; they have three luncheon specials (9.95-11.95) which include soup, spring roll, main course (choice) and dessert.

As usual, I asked for extremely hot. I was pleasantly surprised that they spiced up the soup for me and brought a really nice hot sauce on the side for the spring roll.

Unfortunately, the main course arrived as bland as can be (relatively speaking of course). While it was good tasting, the fact that it had hardly any bite to it turned the meal into a disappointment.

I guess one of these days I should learn my lesson and stick with Corriander Thai where they *always* make it hot when I ask for it hot.
