Vegetarian Cuisine or Veggie Friendly Places

MITZI'S DINING LOUNGE - 1300 BANK ST. NEAR RIVERDALE - 523-1065 (VEGGIE FRIENDLY)

This is a charming little Chinese restaurant in the south end of Ottawa, that is definitely veggie friendly. Besides a wide variety of authentic Cantonese and Szechuan dishes, very tastily prepared, there are about 2 dozen vegetarian items on the menu including appetizers.

The vegetarian items include spring rolls, fried vegetable dumplings, beancurd & vegetable soup, mustard green & bamboo soup, vegetarian delight, imperial bean curd, vegetables and fried noodles, moshe vegetables, eggplant casserole and over a dozen others.

This is a family restaurant with friendly and attentive service and you won't be sorry you tried it. Parking is limited, but on-street parking is available at most times in front of or near the restaurant.

ROSES CAFE - 523 GLADSTONE - 233-5574 (INDIAN/VEGGIE FRIENDLY)

I quite like The Roses. Very tasty & reliably well-made food, pleasant interior, sometimes slow but nice staff (a woman at my table recently didn't eat much of her plate; she just wasn't hungry, & we had the chef inquiring if it wasn't to her liking, which I loved), and it's fairly cheap. And very vegetarian-friendly. The sort of place you wished you lived near so you'd end up eating there all the time.

My only complaint is that it's a little busy sometimes; perhaps I should stop posting about it here... ;^)

The Roses serves up excellent food and ambience at very good prices. There is always a very large selection of curries as "special" curries in addition to the lengthy menu. The vegetarian options are listed BEFORE the non-vegetarian ones on this menu!

PAINTED POTATO - 167 LAURIER AVE. E. - 234-7299

The Painted Potato (e-is optional for Dan Quale fans) is on Laurier East between Cumberland and King Edward. (Where Rosie Lee's used to be.)

The food is excellent, reasonably priced, and the decor very light and simple. The music is uplifting and non invasive to the conversation. The staff is always kind and they are happy to explain the menu and how to order from the board. The people who eat there are quick with a nod, smile and kind word.

The drawback (that also helps keep the cost down) is that it is self serve, and if you forget to get your silverware and water you have to remember to ask the waitress or get it yourself. A small price to pay for a first class meal at student prices!

Chez Nam

CHEZ NAM (VIETNAMESE/VEGGIE FRIENDLY) - 343 B BOOTH - 230-4662

Chez Nam on Booth across from the IGA was a little place I tripped across while hunting for friends I never did find for a luncheon date.

Their vegetarian menu is endless and the food contains no MSG (although the spices they add might have some).

In my life, I have been disappointed with Vietnamese resturants and wondered how a country can live on such boring fare as rice noodles and veggie sprigs.

This food makes you glad that the Chez Nam is in Ottawa. When you go down the stairs to enter the restaurant you must pass a small Buddist altar. It shows the respect and relevance to life that they bring to the food.

The service is excellent. This is a family resturant, with all of the pride it brings. The waitresses are comely and efficient.
